"A library isn’t just a building full of books and women in cardigans. It’s a portal to the world of education, imagination, and wonder. And it’s here, waiting for you, even if you don’t need it and I would think, in these uncertain times, that that would be a great comfort, whoever you are. It bloody well should be."

Blog Idle, post Here's to you, Mr Wilkinson
I have seen this, and (perhaps sadly) the second one too. It is very average entertainment tbh, and maybe it elevates us librarians too much? Well, maybe me anyway... Basically what gets our hero out of trouble is his encyclopedic knowledge... eg: he knows his exact location in a jungle (after being drugged and droppped from an airplane) because of some birds flying overhead...
ReplyDeleteAnd of course, you must all remember Rachel Weisz' classic quote from 'the Mummy'... 'I'm proud to be what i am!... A Librarian!' ooh, i'm getting chills... later, Amanda.
Hi Amanda. I notice that you use Blogs at Massey Uni Library to promote new resources etc. That sounds like a really interesting project - how well is it being received and used thus far? And why did you decide to use Google Blogger as a platform? Thanks, Kirsten
ReplyDeleteI just finished watching Librarian II, Return to King Solomon's Mines. It was great, more of the "Indiana Jones" than "Librarian", but there were some great librarian references! And of course Noah Wylie cant go wrong!
ReplyDeletehey Kirsten,
ReplyDeletei'm still new here so am still learning about the way things happen, but the blogs are run by the college liaison librarians, with contributions by the info services staff such as myself.
The science blog has been up and running for a while now and i know that it is only used for really important information as people (academics) do get overloaded with notifications etc. I must confess that i haven't made a habit of keeping up with the Humanities blog at all. it is something that goes in fits and starts, i guess.
Nicola has been great posting valuable material that we want to get out to the postgrads and academic staff, but i'm not sure how many people read it.
i think there is a lot of pressure for libraries to use web 2.0 communication technologies to advise users of new developments, but i'm not convinced this is the best way...? however we do need a forum to convey this information.
I have no answers as yet, but i think that possibly the library website could be used in a more dynamic way.
However, like the Librarian's manifesto on youtube says, libraries can be slow to change and this is possibly because of the pressure on staff and resources.
Amanda
